I Can Excel (ICE)

OUR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

I Can Excel (ICE) is the name of the signature after school program where girls will receive 4-6 afternoons of skating, off-ice conditioning and educational services at the Jack Adams Memorial Arena in Detroit.

The program improves student academics, encourages active lifestyles, and strengthens leadership skills in girls ages 6-15. At the start of every season, each girl makes a commitment to attend 9-15 hours per week of on-ice instruction and off-ice educational programming, and receives the support of more than 50 tutors, teachers, social workers, counselors and skating coaches. Students receive team warm-up suits and use of skating equipment for the season, and are expected to attend between 3 and 5 afternoons per week. All students perform in the end of season Ice Show and awards banquet. Students may audition for a spot on one of three synchronized skating teams.

The academic component focuses on rigorous small group tutoring to improve basic reading, writing and math competencies. We also introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), financial literacy and communications classes to girls in a way that hones what they are learning in school and builds upon it. Individualized guidance and high school and college access workshops are offered to students throughout the year.

How Can I Apply?

All students must be female, between the ages of 6-15, and must reside in Detroit. All FSH students make a commitment to aim for an “A” average, are in good standing with a “B” average and must attend extra homework tutoring with a “C” average.  After a full application is submitted all students will be contacted for an admissions interview. Tuition is on a sliding scale

For my daughters to see other women and get to meet Olympians that, has helped them tremendously. I want to bring them around positive women. That’s going to help them in the future learn leadership skills.”
